While no list could ever cover every photographic possibility, some standard examples could be helpful to someone learning the process of exposure. Just keep in mind that these are only very basic guidelines, or examples of settings many photographers commonly use. Spectacular evening light with beams of sun punching through the clouds during a summer sunset along the Blue Ridge Parkway. No HDR here, just a single exposure. It was impossible to capture the entire range of tones here without using multiple exposures, but the blown highlights please me in this shot for some reason. I think it adds to the intensity of the light source...

The Genesis Progression - Waterfall Landscape

Here's a new waterfall shot I got while hiking with some friends. When I see sights like this it makes me really thankful for living in the heart of 'the land of the waterfalls' in Western North Carolina. These falls are one of the nicest waterfalls I have seen and are quite large, I'd guess about 40 feet high.

Special thanks to our friends A-Rod and Ricker for hiking three miles through the forest in the pouring rain with us so I could get this shot.

The Devil's Garden - WNC Waterfall

Here's a shot of Courthouse Falls, a beautiful and secluded 45 foot waterfall in the valley below Devil's Courthouse on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This picture doesn't really convey the size of this waterfall, but it's a pretty big one at 45ft. It's a somewhat difficult one to get to as you need a 4x4 truck to drive a few miles in on a dirt forest road to get to it. I'm sure the road is better and worse depending, but we went after a rain storm and it was muddy and slippery going over the mountain...

After looking at it on flickr here, I guess I could have sharpened it a little more for this small size copy. Oh well....

Another Blue Ridge Parkway view with the sun's rays raining down through the clouds. There was a nasty storm moving around and I was lucky to be at the edge of it to get this.

On a side note, as I was shooting I looked down and realized there was a large rattlesnake skin in the crack of the rock near my feet, glad I didn't meet it's previous owner...

Headed up to the Blue Ridge Parkway this morning to see if we could get some shots in the morning fog. The fog was so thick that there weren't any views from the parkway to be seen, so we headed up on Black Balsam and found this cool foggy atmosphere under a stand of trees.

Yes, Fall Foliage is breathtakingly beautiful, but it means lots of yardwork. When the leaves start to fall it's time to get out the leaf blower or rake. It's all worth it though with scenes like this one. Western North Carolina is one of the most beautiful places in the United Sates to enjoy the beauty of fall.

Rocky Creek

Here's a rocky creek with a small waterfall during the fall foliage in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This was a neat little place to stop and picnic and someone had already built a nice little fire pit and made some nice seats out of large river stones. I like how the depth of field decreases very slightly as you go back, putting a little more emphasis on the front falls. I like leaves on the rocks as fall makes its presence felt in this beautiful Western North Carolina stream.

"Smoky Mountain Morning"

Here's a morning shot Dave got while on vacation recently near Fontana, NC. He was riding his motorcycle along this great road called the "Hellbender 28" first thing in the morning and as he came around a bend there was a gap in the trees and this beautiful vista before us. This shot has kind of a painted feel to it I think. He dedicated this one to my good friend Alan the painter, whos vanilla sky mountain landscapes inspired this shot.

"An Autumn Evening" - WNC Landscape

This sunset picture was taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway in autumn. Pretty amazing what you can see here this time of the year, it's just so beautiful. This is truly a piece of art. If this doesn't make you want to be here nothing will. The contrast of the trees and the sky is why I like this one so much. The sunset in the sky is causing pastel pink and purple, and the trees are the deep vibrant colors of autumn, red, yellow, green, orange.

This picture taken from the Blue Ridge Parkway is just stunning. The sky is so pretty. Fall colors have been beautiful this year as this Parkway overlook photograph illustrates. Nice depth of field with great detail in the foreground. Just fantastic, gorgeous color! This time of year it really is beautiful here.
